Power Out

Major power outages are sweeping San Francisco right now, and the Web is taking a hit. That is, the non-kyleparkinson.com Web. Craigslist, Netflix, Yelp, Technorati, Typepad, LiveJournal, and others have been down for most or part of the day. Meanwhile, kyleparkinson.com’s lack of posts has been due not to electrical outages, but rather a nagging cold and plans to expand the site to include a photo gallery. Oh, and my job.

Always one to find the irony in things though, I’ve posted above a recent ONN video about the Internet crashing. Enjoy. Oh also, I’m not sure about this new FoxyTunes footer on the blog post, but I figured right now it was appropriate to show what’s playing. Let’s hope this doesn’t (or does?) become NYC ‘77.

Save Internet Radio

Internet radio

I don’t know about you, but I’m digging this Internet thing. I think it could really take off. One of my favorite things about it is Internet radio because it provides an outlet when I’m too fickle for my own library, and it turns me onto some great music.

So you can imagine the personal soundtrack when I realized the perils facing Internet radio. A morning that started out with Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is” soon turned into a disaffected downward spiral featuring such tearjerkers as Tindersticks’ “Trouble Every Day,” Beach House’s “Master of None” and Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice” (I was on a Foreigner kick, what can I say?).

You see, the man is trying to bring down our beloved Internet radio by imposing a ridiculously exorbitant royalty rate increase that many small stations simply cannot afford. Unless we stop it, the rate hike is set for July 15th. So join me in helping out our e-DJs by heading over to SaveNetRadio.org for more information about the cause. Even if it’s just a simple call or email to your local senators and representatives, every little bit helps.

In the meantime, it’s back to planning my Foreigner-only Internet radio station.

Thank you, my friend… Larry

Word today that Larry James, a.k.a. Food Court Larry, has passed away after battling cancer of his small intestine for several months. He was 62. Larry was an interesting character, and he bordered on completely inappropriate sometimes, but it was always in good fun and the man never showed a bad side. He was one of those people that for some inexplicable reason, you kind of appreciated at the end of the day.  I didn’t know much about him,  he didn’t know much about me, but we always had good laughs.  The world needs more people like him.  Rest in peace, Larry James 1944-2007.
