Keeping Young Lovers Entertained

Pioneer CDJ-400

I finally took the plunge and bought Pioneer CDJ-400 turntables and a Pioneer DJM-400 mixer. I had been on the fence for a while, not knowing whether I wanted to stay computer-based. But in the first twenty-four hours, I’m already completely psyched with the purchase. Amazing how much more you can do with real equipment.

Anyway, I haven’t been writing on this blog enough, but I’m hoping to improve in the coming months. As the summer fog rolls in, I’ll be keeping my head down and staying productive, so hopefully it includes lots of blogging. In the meantime, I’ve got to go find a provocatively-short bathing suit for all the upcoming pool parties. Down, ladies, down.

Wanderlust

Björk’s new video for “Wanderlust” is one of the most visually exciting things I’ve seen in a long time. It goes beyond the realm of just a music video, as it is masterfully executed by design team Encyclopedia Pictura, the same guys who created Grizzly Bear’s “Knife” video. Going way beyond budget (but not letting it stop them), they drew on inspiration from mushroom-fueled trips into the forest. And it shows.Definitely check out the high-quality 3-D version over at Encyclopedia Pictura. And check out the New York Times’ interview with the creators.

The Honeydrips

The Honeydrips

I first heard about the Honeydrips a couple months ago, and I’ve been dying to get my hands on their music, but all I was finding were expensive imports. Luckily now there are more tracks floating around the Internet, so I can play songs like “Trying Something New” on repeat.

The Gothenburg-based band has been the brainchild of singer/songwriter Mikael Carlsson since 2003. From what I’ve heard so far, the band’s sound ranges from traditional-sounding ballads to beat-driven indie rockers. Posted below are two songs of the latter style. Enjoy, and go see the band open for Jens Lekman on his current tour.

Stuck on Repeat

Little Boots

I came across Little Boots‘ “Stuck on Repeat” on Missing Toof a couple weeks ago, and I figured it would be one of those catchy songs I listened to a few times in a row thinking it was the greatest, then never listened to again. A month later and I’m still pretty much listening to the song on repeat. Featuring production from Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, and vocals from Victoria Hesketh (formerly of Dead Disco), this song will undoubtedly get stuck in your head. The production is on par with Simian Mobile Disco, and that voice, wow. I am definitely looking forward to hear what else they bring us. Give a listen to the original mix and the dub mix below:

Throw Me the Statue

Throw Me the Statue

Every once in a while, a band comes out of left field to quickly find itself in steady rotation on my iPod. Throw Me the Statue is the latest such band, touching on a folkiness reminiscent of Smog, but giving it an electronic flavor a la the Helio Sequence. Scott Reitherman, the creative force behind the band, tops it all off with .

Take a listen to a couple tracks from the band’s debut album, Moonbeams, out now on Secretly Canadian. The band has a ton of tour dates coming up, so be sure to check them out when they come to town.
